TamilNadu Open University (TNOU) has come out with M.Sc (Counselling & Psychotherapy) & PG Diploma in Psychological Counselling, both in distance education mode, to enable already studying / working people to pursue the course parallely. Unlike many other courses in the field, this course is delivered at mental health centers by competent mental health professionals, who do counselling on a regular basis.

For the western part of TamilNadu, Vazhikatti Mental Health Centre & Research Institute at Peelamedu, Coimbatore has been selected as the regional centre for running the course.

About the Course

Counselling & Psychotherapy in recent years, are gaining importance, as there is a lot of improvement in the methodology and techniques. They are complementary to any system or branch of medical treatment. The focus is more on care and as such is non pharmacological and non medical one. Therefore, it can be practised by non medical persons.

Aims & Objectives of the course

The objective of the course is mainly to impart knowledge on Psychopathology, Abnormal behavior, and psychotherapeutic techniques, developed on the basis of various theories. The aim is to develop the human potentials and to make a harmonious living in the context of growing social pathology, interpersonal conflicts, value erosion, and increasing violence. The alarming increase of problems relating to mental health, frustrations and depression are to be kept in check. In this direction, the Counselors and Psychotherapists could help the society.

As per G.O. Ms. No.107, the Tamilnadu Government recognizes Diplomas / Degrees awarded through Open Universities for the purpose of employment / promotion in public services, only if those Diplomas / Degrees are obtained after having successfully completed the minimum year of schooling in the 10+2+3 pattern of education.
