Judicious mix of treatment methods

Treatment depends on the nature and severity of the conditions and the underlying causes. The causes may be multiple and it may vary from individual to individual depending on age, sex, education, occupation, location, health and socioeconomic status, etc. Hence, treatment has to be personalized and optimised to meet the needs of the individual and also his family and life circumstances. This may involve counselling, pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, psychosocial interventions, lifestyle interventions, etc, in varying combination. That is what we call, the judicious mix of treatment methods.

Personal note from Dr K Selvaraj:

You don't have to be mentally ill or disordered to seek help at Vazhikatti Mental Health Centre. The most basic form of help in the field of Mental Health Care is counselling. For otherwise healthy people with personal, psychological distress due to life’s challenges and problems, counselling alone may be appropriate and enough. Usually, interpersonal conflicts among family members, friends and workmates and issues in intimate relationships are dealt primary by counselling.

The scope at Vazhikatti goes well beyond treating traditional mental illness and disorders. This wider scope has been kept in place even at the time of naming the organisation in 2002, and hence, called Mental Health Centre, rather than just a psychiatric hospital. Apart from treating mental illness, it envisioned stress management, mental health protection, mental health promotion, clinical training for aspiring mental health professionals and also research in the field of Mental Health Care.
