Do I need admission as an In-Patient for alcohol addiction treatment?
Deaddiction treatment for alcoholism is one of the frequently sought help at Vazhikatti. The unique aspect of Deaddiction treatment at Vazhikatti is the multidisciplinary care provided by Psychiatrists, Clinical Psychologists, Counselling Psychologists, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, and Mental Health Nurses.
A short term, intensive therapy with14 days of stay in the hospital will include family counselling for parents / children and spouse, educational sessions on alcoholism, small Group therapy, Occupational therapy sessions, Individual counselling / Psychotherapy, treatment of associated physical illness and physical complication of alcoholism and treatment of underlying or coexisting other psychological issues. Long-term follow-up support for 2 years will be provided on Out-patient basis.

What is the cost of consultation with the psychiatrist and how much time does it take?
The first consultation with a psychiatrist will cost Rs.750/-. This includes the registration charge. If there are any additional psychological tests required, the appointment for assessment will be fixed and the charges will be communicated. The whole process, from registration to doctor consultation and other processes, will take around 2 to 3 hours.
Is your hospital open on Sunday?
Our hospital is open 24/7 for psychiatric emergencies, and in-patient admissions are taken on Sundays. Outpatient services are open Monday to Saturday, 9 am to 6 pm.

Do you have a rehabilitation home?
We do not have a rehabilitation home for long-term care. Ours is a psychiatric hospital where patients take treatment by staying as in-patients for around 7 to 14 days and then getting discharged.
Should a psychiatric patient take medications for life?
No. There are over 200 types of mental disorders as per the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) International Classification of Diseases (ICD 11th edition). The majority of common mental disorders require only short-term medications. A very few challenging mental disorders, like chronic schizophrenia, only require long-term medication. Since science is always advancing, there can be break-through treatments acquired. So, we cannot and need not use terms like "lifelong."
Will I get any side effects from taking psychiatric medications?
The type of medication used and the dosages prescribed depend on the type of medication. There are ways to reduce these kinds of transient side effects. Only when the benefits are greater than the side effects will any medication be prescribed. Of course, sedation, drowsiness, dryness of the mouth, constipation, and slowness are common side effects.
Do you perform ECT?
Yes, we do. But, rarely. Only when it is indicated Though there are a lot of misconceptions about ECT among people, it is still one of the most effective treatment options for certain conditions like severe depression, suicidal risk, catatonic stupor of schizophrenia, severe mania, etc.
Do you offer treatment for memory problems for aged people?
Yes. We are interested in helping elderly people deal with their mental health problems and challenges like mild memory disturbance (mild cognitive impairment), severe memory disturbance (Dementia-Alzheimer's type, vascular, Parkinson disease associated, mixed type, etc), geriatric depression, and late-onset psychosis.
Do you perform hypnosis?
What was once a popular treatment method for conditions like ‘Hysteria’ is no longer used in Clinical Psychiatry. Even when used, the benefits are transient and superficial. If at all it is recommended, it is more in the area of self-hypnosis for managing a healthy lifestyle.
